Hints & Tips

Another Use for Texture Plates

The Texture Plates included in the Shape Makers sets make good square and rectangle shape templates. Just lay them on flattened sheets of clay and cut around them with the Super Slicer rigid blade or Clay Knife.

Scrap Clay

Save scraps of clay in plastic sandwich bags for later use. Mark the outside of each bag with the color name with permanent ink.

Incompatible: Bake & Bond and Antiquing Medium

Bake & Bond does not receive Antiquing Medium well, so make sure any Bake & Bond is hidden on your finished projects.

The Perfect Pair: Lift 'n Scrape and Bake & Bond

The Lift 'n Scrape is the perfect tool for applying Bake & Bond to a flat surface. Just use the Lift 'n Scrape like a trowel to smooth on the Bake & Bond.

Glaze Tips

On vertical surfaces (when glaze may run) apply glaze thinly and with a sponge if desired. A sponge may cause some bubbling which can be easily remedied by blowing gently across the surface. Allow glaze to dry completely and re-coat as desired.

Bake Antiquing Medium onto clay before glazing so that the wet glaze will not reconstitute the Antiquing Medium.

Add glaze to just small areas on a design to add more depth and interest.

Glazes can also be applied to wood and paper mache areas to make the finish more consistent with clay pieces.

Antiquing Medium Tips

Make sure to get the Antiquing Medium into  the deepest crevices of your project. This will help achieve the most 'antiqued' look.

An area as large as 6" x 6" can be covered with Antiquing Medium before it is wiped away.

Antiquing Medium can be applied like paint to wood and paper mache surfaces for a perfect match.

Measuring Clay Without a Ruler

Many of the Studio by Sculpey tools can be used as quick measuring devices:

The Acrylic Roller measures 8" long and 1" wide.

Texture Makers measure 6" x 4".

Etch 'n Pearls measure 8.5" in length.

1/2" Grid Texture Maker creates perfect 1/2" tiles.

1/4" Grid Texture Maker creates perfect 1/4" tiles.

Making Flat Tiles

Work the clay as usual, but do any final cuts on a glazed ceramic tile. The clay will stick to the tile. Cure the project on the tile and once the clay is cool use the Lift 'n Scrape to release the clay tile. The tile will be perfectly flat with no bowing at all.

Clay Volume

A package of Studio by Sculpey will yield approximately 30 square inches of clay when rolled out 1/8" thick. That's the equivalent of:

6 Large Oak Shape Makers or

5 Large Maple Shape Makers or

6 Large Holly Shape Makers or

13 Small Holly Shape Makers or

8 Large Gingko Shape Makers or

2.5 Large Flower Power Shape Makers

Curling Leaves

Use the ball end of a Style & Detail Tool or the Ball Tool from the Clay Tool Variety Set for curling leaves. For a more natural look, curl around the outside of the top of a leaf as usual. Then, turn the leaf over and curl along the back of the vein to give the leaf a natural bend down the middle.
